The Importance of Sleep

As someone who has struggled with a sleepless baby, anxiety and stress management, I understand just how difficult it can be to get a restful night’s sleep at times. But is it really that important?

Sleep actually helps us to repair our bodies from any damage they’ve sustained in the course of our day and can help with concentration and overall feelings of wellbeing. Whilst there has been no direct correlation found between a lack of sleep and weight gain, motivation for engaging in healthy activity and nutrition is reduced when we’re sleep deprived. As well as the fact that the more hours we’re awake, the more propensity we have to eat, and when we’re tired, we reach for high sugar and high fat foods to keep our energy levels up.

So what can we do to improve sleep? I’ve found the following to be really helpful –

  • Write a to-do list for tomorrow to prevent tasks playing on your mind
  • Drop screens at bedtime
  • Pick up a book – Kindle Paperwhite is backlit to prevent disturbing others or waking you fully
  • Play some relaxing music
  • Listen to some wellbeing podcasts, and not just at bedtime. Try Oprah Super Soul Sessions or Jay Shetty On Purpose.

  • Keep your room clutter free
  • Give yourself a face massage or have someone massage your hands, face feet or head
