So I’ve been paying more close attention to what I’m eating over the last week or two, as I know what a huge part of my mood depends on being well nourished.
Whilst I’m not being overly restrictive in what I eat, I’m thinking about what I put into my body rather than just eating whatever comes to hand because I feel hungry.
The pandemic has left most of us spending most of our days at home, rather than following our daily routine, and it’s easy to get into the habit of grazing throughout the day.
I find that when I avoid that constant grazing, I enjoy my meals more, as I’m actually hungry when I sit down to eat.
These are my top tips for being a little more mindful about food.
- Meal planning and preparation when you have some free time is key – batch cooking on your day off and freezing portions for the busy week ahead can help relieve some of the stress around eating well.
- Start the day with some hydration – herbal tea or hot water with lemon helps me to rehydrate after sleeping before I start into the coffee!
- Eat a nutritious breakfast as early as you feel hungry – sometimes you won’t feel like eating straight upon waking, however, having something that you can grab and eat on the commute or when you get to the office is great. I find overnight oats or a simple banana and oatcakes can be great for eating on the run.
- Buy a refillable bottle and sip water all day long – you’ll be surprised at how much less hungry you feel when you’re well hydrated. Aim for at least 2 litres per day and try not to overdo the caffeinated drinks which will dehydrate you further.
- Fill a fruit bowl with apples, bananas and any other fruits you love. When you have a colourful display of fresh fruit, you’re more likely to make better snack choices.
- Put the tempting snacks on the top shelf. Don’t deny yourself anything, but rather than go straight to the chocolate biscuits with your tea, think about how you’re feeling at the time. Is it just out of habit that you want that biscuit, or is it something you really want? Let yourself sit with that thought for at least 15 minutes and if you still want the biscuit then, go for it!
- Don’t allow yourself to go hungry, but be honest. Are you really hungry or can you wait another 45 minutes until dinner is ready?
